Reporting to the Superintendent, this position will lead the operations team to ensure daily activities at the facility are executed efficiently and effectively to industry best practices. The incumbent will have a full working knowledge of equipment, gas operations, maintenance and monitoring facilities under their control. The Operator Tech 1 is fully familiar with all aspects of gas plant operations, procedures for safety, troubleshooting, production logging, start-up, shut-down and equipment maintenance.

This position is located in Prince Rupert, BC and requires relocation to the area. Relocation assistance is available.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensure that workers have adequate certifications, orientation and training for any activities occurring on worksites

  • Lead daily operation from the control room of RIPET during a 12 hour day, 4 on – 4 off rotation

  • Operate and adjust process from DCS control panel

  • Daily work planning including (but not limited to) the following activities:

    • Completion of Maximo work orders

    • Completion all site documentation requirements

    • Shift changeover communication & documentation

  • Responsible for all operational communications/updates

  • Coordinate with operations Superintendent to develop site specific procedures.Complete ongoing review of SOP’s for continuous improvement

  • Coordinate with Field and Office personnel as required to execute critical management system processes including (but not limited to) the following:

    • Management of Change

    • Non-Conformance Reports

    • Hazard Identification

    • Incident Investigation

    • Safe Work Permits

    • Ground Disturbance

  • Solid understanding of companies HSE policies and ensure the safe operation of the terminal by maintaining awareness for personal safety and that of co-workers, outside contractors and customers

  • Adhere to all AltaGas Policies, Standards, Procedures and Practices

  • Recognize and avoid inappropriate risks, consider the consequences and impact and consult with senior personnel if unsure of action to be taken

  • Participate as a member of the Emergency Response Team; actively participate in emergency situations (fire/spill) when required

  • Work closely with Superintendent on operations work schedule

  • Collaborate with Superintendent and Maintenance Lead to identify and prioritize daily maintenance tasks

  • Provide leadership in the absence of the Superintendent or Operations Manager

  • Working knowledge of all emergency response plans related to Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal (RIPET) operations


  • Ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of operational experience in an extraction plant with refrigeration system, with 5 years of it working as a panel operator

  • Proven leadership abilities as demonstrated by your ability to plan, direct, coordinate and supervise the work of a multi-disciplinary team engaged in the operation and maintenance of the facility

  • Completion of S.A.I.T’s Gas Processing Operations course

  • 4th Class Power Engineering certificate

  • Proficient computers skills with (Excel, Word & Outlook)

  • Ability to work effectively and make sound decisions during plant upset conditions

  • Must possess the physical capabilities to safely perform all essential aspects and responsibilities of a Terminal Operator position

  • Demonstrated safety mindset; ability to actively participate in all safety initiatives

  • Ability to participate as an active member of the Emergency Response Team

  • Strong, professional verbal and written communication skills

  • Previous knowledge of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) railcar operations and / or Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) operations would be considered an asset
