AltaGas Ltd. requires an experienced, innovative, and motivated individual to join our Human Resources department.

Working as a leader of a results-focused and service-oriented team, the Manager Total Rewards will play an integral role in managing compensation, benefit and pension programs of AltaGas, as well as the development of key talent supporting these programs.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead the development, communication and delivery of a total compensation strategy consistent with the strategic direction and goals set by the executive team of AltaGas

  • Lead, motivate, and develop a diverse team of HR professionals with a focus on leading effectively through change and fostering integration and collaboration

  • Oversee monthly and quarterly reporting cycles for all workforce budget, total rewards programs and HR analytics statistics required by senior management

  • Oversee market research and review industry best practices to recommend new or changes to existing total rewards systems that enables AltaGas to attract, reward and retain top talent

  • Produce reporting on Total Rewards programs that meet the needs of the Executive team and Board of Directors

Compensation Program accountabilities:

  • Manage compensation design and/or system projects and provide technical expertise, advice and analysis related to AltaGas’ compensation program structure and plans

  • Provide leadership on the development of compensation and incentive program structures in an evolving environment, with a goal to ensure programs positively support the strategic positioning of the company

  • Communicate and educate appropriate audiences on cost/risks/benefits associated with AltaGas’ compensation program recommendations, including financial, tax and strategic risks and benefits;

  • Produce materials/reporting for Board of Director and Human Resources and Compensation committee meetings;

  • Provide mentorship to junior staff with respect to incentive program administration, process, design and overall administrative reporting and efficiency.

  • Direct annual incentive program processes and salary review process for non-unionized staff;

  • Manage AltaGas’ executive compensation programs and implement Board-approved strategy

  • Manage inputs into all annual external regulatory filings

Pension and Benefit program accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership and oversight to Benefit and Pension services function for the organization;

  • Participate in and produce materials for the company’s internal Retirement and Savings Committee and reporting for the Board of Directors and AltaGas

  • Lead pension and benefit plan design projects

  • Oversee pension and benefit regulatory and administration processes

  • Work with US-based counterparts to ensure alignment in program offerings and reporting

  • Produce annual pension and savings plan report for the Board of Directors and AltaGas Executive

  • Conduct periodic reviews of AltaGas’ benefits plan to ensure an optimum balance of coverage and cost


  • Participate in annual budgeting cycles and provide oversight of annual employee budget processes for AltaGas Ltd.

  • Ensure the effective oversight of internal controls, risk management and compliance

  • Manage relationships with external tax, compensation, benefits and pension consultants

  • Provide subject matter expertise to HR team members to ensure compensation and total rewards policies and practices are applied consistently

  • Participate in system-focused initiatives that support areas of accountability

  • Review and recommend changes to policy and administrative procedures related to AltaGas’ programs

  • Deliver quality customer service and solutions to internal clients, as required


  • Exceptional attention to detail, communication skills and strong sense of urgency to achieve results

  • Strong leadership capability and presence, with the talent to balance the need to delegate to team members with rolling up sleeves to drive team success

  • Related degree with a minimum of ten to fifteen years of Human Resources experience specific to areas of compensation program and pension plan management as well as relevant professional certification

  • Extensive technical knowledge related to compensation and pension plan design, strategy and effective implementation

  • Proficient understanding of regulatory environment, particularly in the areas of compensation and pension administration in Canada and the US

  • Understands the dynamics of a large and growing organization and can accurately identify high-priority customer and project deliverables
