Reporting to the Plant General Manager, the Plant Engineer will provide technical leadership and direction to support the AltaGas’ Northwest Hydroelectric power facilities.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Contribute to the availability and reliability of all plant equipment, collaborating with operations and maintenance on problems concerning equipment and facilities.

  • Complete or coordinate completion of quality assurance documentation for plant improvement projects and contractor maintenance programs.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of operating procedures.

  • Perform analysis and/or collection of large data sets consisting of: plant operations data, plant production models, operations financials.

  • Assist in monitoring of operations financials through established data collection and reporting methods.

  • Assist in developing, implementing and maintaining preventative and predictive programs.

  • Assist in managing the plant maintenance expense budget and the maintenance reserve budget for the plant.

  • Insure that the plant is operated in accordance with all applicable contracts and government regulations.

  • Monitor and report on plant performance (i.e. unit efficiency and capacity tests) and consistently seek to make improvements to the plant's operational efficiencies.

  • Establish and maintain maintenance standards.Prepare maintenance programs for long-range economies.Work with plant operators to learn and become capable of operating the plant.

  • Provide equipment failure analysis.Review updates and changes to preventative maintenance program and provide technical support when appropriate.Interface with safety and environmental leaders to assure plant compliance in both areas.

  • Maintain plant drawings, manuals and documents related to modifications.

  • Participate in the selection, negotiations and technical discussions of the main suppliers and sub-contractors for maintenance related services.

  • Responsible for making sure engineering deliverables and supply deliveries are made on-time and according to established quality criteria for all systems related to the site.

  • Maintain awareness of safe working conditions and practices safe work habits in all activities.Caution others, as necessary, about working in a safe manner.

  • Support site purchasing and logistics.



  • Bachelor's degree in a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering discipline.

  • P.Eng. designation is considered an asset.

  • Data analysis skills. Experience in processing and working with large data sets. Utilization of MS excel and pivot tables is key.

  • Effective problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Effective time management and decision making skills.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Immediate-level computer skills.

  • Ability to successfully analyze, negotiate and manage business contracts.

  • Adequate understanding of the budgeting process and financial planning activities.

  • Proven leadership and experience in technical coordination of engineering activities and subcontracting.

  • Ability to successfully supervise employees.

  • Ability to work call-outs when required.

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work in a noisy environment and work in adverse weather conditions.

  • Considered an asset: Experience with major plant equipment, rotating equipment, hydroelectricity, plant systems and processes; generators, turbines, high voltage equipment test equipment and test procedures. Quality management. Operational procedures and efficiencies. Environmental regulations and safety procedures.
