First Contact Support Volunteer

Toronto Region


To provide support to operations through client’s interaction, administrative support, etc.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients as assigned by staff; duties may include but may not be limited to providing the following:  translation, interpretation, orientation, intake 
  • Provide referrals and information over the phone or in person
  • Contact community agencies for information
  • Revise and update program materials
  • On-call possibilities for interpretation purposes
  • General administration support (fax, photocopy, etc.)
  • Light tidying up
  • Accompany clients to appointments when needed
  • May be asked at short notice to help out on other dates then assigned (have a flexible schedule)
  • Other duties as assigned


Skills, Knowledge, Behaviour:

  • Organizational skills, record keeping, computer skills (Microsoft, Excel, Power Point)
  • Experience with refugees, newcomers, homeless and under-housed individuals an asset
  • Experience in social service field an asset
  • Mature, patient, professional, reliable
  • Professional and courteous telephone manners
  • Required learning: The Red Cross Movement’s History and Principles, Refugee Determination Process, Community Resources, and Settlement Issues



  • Police reference check
  • Adhere to confidentiality policy and guidelines
  • Good communication skills
  • Second language beneficial: Spanish, Farsi, French, Arabic


Time Commitment:

  • Minimum 4 to 5 hours per shift, per week, weekday shifts; 6 month to a year minimum


Training Available:

  • Introduction to the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement
  • Program training and orientation (clients served, shelter lists, refugee determination process, community resources, etc.)
  • Others



  • Working in a multicultural environment
