The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a Coordinator, for the National Swimming and Water Safety department.  Reporting to the Director, Swimming and Water Safety Programs, the Coordinator, Swimming and Water Safety Programs is responsible for ensuring effective planning, implementation and coordination of all Swimming and Water Safety Programs and for the coordination and support of activities required for the annual water-related fatality data collection. The incumbent demonstrates effective planning, organizational and facilitation skills to achieve outcomes, as well as expertise in implementing strategies and providing support for the programs to ensure success and growth. Please note work location for this position is flexible within Canada.



  • Provides leadership and technical support for the Red Cross Lifeguard and Instructor Development Program under the direction of the Director, Swimming and Water Safety Programs, to the Swimming and Water Safety staff responsible for customer support  and account management

  • Coordinates resources and training to supports expert witness testimony.

  • Supports the work of the volunteer Swimming and Water Safety Technical Advisory Group (SWS TAG).

  • Maintains an in-depth, comprehensive knowledge of program content, standards, policies and procedures for all Swimming and Water Safety programs.

  • Maintenance of key contacts to ensure that Red Cross SWS training programs meet regulations for employment.

  • Coordinates research and program content analysis.

  • Provide support to field staff for management of the Aquatic Safety Plan.

  • Coordinates the work of the team for annual collection of water-related fatalities data and oversees the verification, data entry and report generation process.

  • Participates in planning and evaluation activities of the overall Swimming and Water Safety Program.

  • Provides support to SWS staff in handling Red Cross Lifeguard Program issues related to Training Partners (for program delivery standards), Red Cross Lifeguard and Instructor/Instructor Trainer Development programs



The minimum qualifications for this job are the completion of post secondary education in recreation programs, adult education and/or equivalent workplace experience (3 to 6 years of experience) in facilitation and education,  both participant training and Instructor Development Program levels with experience at the Water Safety Instructor Trainer level and/or Lifeguard Instructor Trainer  (minimum 4 years) or higher.

  • Demonstrated experience in relationship management with internal and external stakeholders is essential.

  • Extensive knowledge and work experience in the field of aquatics with supervisory/management responsibilities (minimum 8 years).

  • Knowledge of legislation governing the workplace relative to First Aid and Lifeguarding.

  • Working knowledge of Red Cross Lifeguard and Instructor Development Program

  • Pool Programmer or Pool Operators certification (not required to be current)

  • Customer Service knowledge, skills and work approach are essential.

  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships in a virtual work environment.

  • Experience in volunteer management and program planning is required.

  • Experience in working with a diverse population and an understanding of cultural issues is an asset.



  • Strong oral and written communication in English

  • Fluency in French is a definite asset

  • Knowledge of standard office procedures and MS Office Suite including MS Access

  • General knowledge and understanding of aquatics industry.

35 hour work week, Monday to Friday

Physical work location for this position is flexible within Canada.

The majority of the work is performed in an office environment which is mostly clean and comfortable. 

The incumbent has supervisory responsibility for volunteer working groups, consultants, or members of project teams.

Occasional requirement to work overtime hours, often with short notice.

Domestic travel may be required.

Optional: Valid provincial driver’s license and First Aid Certification  (training provided) required.
