Bike Mechanic

Closing Date: 06/04/17
Employment Status: Casual

MEC stores are more than bricks and mortar. And they're more than places to buy hats and backpacks. They're hubs for the outdoor community. People step through our doors to connect, learn, find gear and get inspired.

As a Bike Mechanic, you’ll get members ready to ride. You’ll take bikes apart, put bikes together, and do all the fixing required in between. Our bike shops are full of variety, and you’ll work on everything from high-end road or mountain machines to well-loved commuters and bikes for little rippers.

You’ll work with an inclusive, hands-on, collaborative group that connects people with quality products to encourage active outdoor lives. You’ll always be learning, and there’s a good chance your co-workers will inspire you to try something new, like riding in a Fondo, bouldering or paddleboarding.

What you do:

  • Assemble, maintain and repair bicycles within MEC's productivity, quality, and safety guidelines.
  • Keep the shop clean and organized.
  • Be friendly and lend a hand with member service when you’re on the store floor.
  • Mentor and train frontline staff about bike repair processes and procedures.
  • Do all repairs with MEC sustainability principles in mind.
  • Help out with special projects that come up.
  • In winter, our bike mechanics help our ski shop. So you’ll also install, adjust and repair ski bindings.

What you bring:

  • 6 months to 1 year of experience doing maintenance and repairs in a bike shop (or equivalent).
  • A good natured, welcoming vibe. You’re outgoing and genuinely like helping people.
  • Great communication skills – you listen first, then share knowledge.
  • Mechanical aptitude. You reason things out and find ways to make it work, even when it’s something you haven’t seen before (like a four-person-tandem tune-up) (yes, that happened).
  • You’re stoked on bikes and riding.
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts from Monday to Sunday.

Bonus points if you…

  • Have bike grease under your nails.
  • Can fix a flat in under five minutes.
  • Keep a tally of favours owed to you for trailside or roadside repairs.
  • Know how many kilometres you get to the burrito.
  • Live by n+1.

We've described the essentials of what it takes to make things happen in this role. We strive to make it possible for people with disabilities to succeed here too, so if you have a disability, let us know what extra support you need, and we'll make reasonable accommodations.
