Position Summary:

As an Orderly you will be working as a member of the clinical team and under the direction of the Registered Nurse/Registered Practical Nurse, the incumbent provides and supports patient care delivery.

Responsibilities:

Observing and reporting changes in patient’s condition

  • Lifting, positioning, turning, transferring and ambulating patients

  • Weighing patients

  • Feeding, bathing/grooming and toileting

  • Observing and noting intake & output

  • Calming and restraining restless patients, maintaining safety devices as ordered (as per Least Restraint Policy)

  • Obtaining and labeling non-invasive specimens as directed (i.e. urine, etc)

  • Providing one-on-one observation and care of designated patients.

 

Provide patient care to assigned patients ensuring efficient use of resources by:

  • Responding to Code White and Code Blue situations when required

  • Cleaning after soils/spills (i.e. body fluids) and arranging for disposal according to Infection Control protocols

  • Daily bed making

  • Responding to patient requests, including call bells

  • Providing assistance with orientation/discharge to/from unit as assigned

  • Assist with emergency situations as directed

 

Assumes responsibility for maintenance of knowledge and skills by:

  • Participating in indirect activities related to patient care and services provided (i.e. staff meetings, educational inservices, etc)

  • Participating in unit-related programs and activities

  • Participating in hospital and unit-related programs and activities such as, but not exclusive to:

  • CQI/Risk Management

  • Waste Management

  • Accreditation

  • Occupational Health & Safety including WHMIS, Crisis Prevention Intervention, etc.

  • Staff meetings/Unit council

  • Orientation and training of new staff

 

Performs other duties such as required

 

Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of sterility and aseptic technique

  • Post-secondary education

  • Knowledge of departmental/hospital policies & procedures

  • Basic knowledge of established Infection Control and Occupational Health & Safety practices

  • Knowledge of body mechanics, and safe lift and transfer practices

  • CPR (Heartsaver or BCLS)
