The Heritage Conservation Specialist supports the functions and responsibilities of the BGIS Heritage Conservation Program, ensuring delivery of projects, facility/property management requirements, monitoring of heritage assets and heritage conservation oversight at heritage buildings. Duties are typically of low complexity, risk and exposure.


Subject Matter Expert

  • Supports the BGIS Heritage Conservation Program
  • Supports in management of projects at federal heritage buildings
  • Monitors development of projects at federal heritage buildings
  • Develops Heritage Conservation Guidance documents
  • Monitors heritage inventories of buildings and movable heritage assets
  • Supports in heritage risk assessments, heritage reviews and other project delivery requirements
  • Researches on federal heritage buildings and other topics
  • Assists in conforming with heritage programs, policies, regulations and guidelines

Communication, Collaboration and Presentation

  • Collaborates with project managers, stakeholders, clients and consultants
  • Communicates with relevant team members
  • Liaises, communicates and builds strong relationships with the client
  • Attends meetings throughout the delivery of projects and other meetings
  • Assists in presentations on heritage conservation principles, guidelines and other relevant conventions
  • Presents on heritage conservation processes, standards and guidelines to all team members
  • Other duties as assigned


  • University degree in architectural history, heritage conservation, architecture, and/or a specialization in cultural resource management within a broader discipline or equivalent work experience;
  • 1 to 3 years of job related work experience in applied heritage conservation;
  • Experience and knowledge of Architecture and construction: (reading of drawings, plans and specs; design processes etc.)
  • Knowledge of heritage policy, standards, guidelines and regulatory information


  • Strong Communication skills: understanding, accuracy, influence, persuasion, and negotiation;
  • Strong Reading and writing skills: clarity, grammar, logic
  • Strong Analytical and research skills: proficiency, efficiency, archival research experience;
  • Effective Relationship building: maturity in developing and maintaining relationships, respect;
  • Experience in Project management would be considered an asset
  • Language: Bilingualism an asset


  • Strong Quality-oriented abilities: continuous improvement, incorporate best practices and technologies to optimize program delivery and deliver value to the client
  • Computer proficiency: proven ability with MS Office suite
  • Sound Time and risk management abilities: experience in self-management of time, and mitigating and managing risk
  • Client management: proven ability and experience in managing client relationships and expectations
  • Team leadership: proven ability and experience in leadership abilities
  • Bilingualism French/English : a strong asset

Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation

The following is an asset:

  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (Professional or Intern membership)
