On behalf of its client, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), at its Historic Waste Program (HWP) Management Office in Port Hope, implements federal programs and projects related to the safe management of historic low-level waste (LLW) across Canada. The scope of work includes characterization, cleanup and interim remedial work at historic waste sites in Canada as well as the construction, operation and environmental monitoring of waste storage facilities. The project is sponsored by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and led by CNL. CNL provides high-level strategic direction and oversight to the project via the General Manager, HWP MO.

The Project Assistant (PA), will work under the direction of the Program Office Manager, mainly providing support to the Project Controls team by assembling and organizing critical project-related information and providing analysis on schedule information, including scope and costs.



The essential duties of the Project Assistant, Project Delivery, are described in the following:
•  Obtaining schedule update information from service providers and internal project team members
•  Support creating a schedule based on general project information when required
•  Updating the schedules with actual progress and costs as required in support of Project Control Coordinators
•  Extracting relevant schedule, cost, and resource demand information from Primavera 6
•  Verifying the legitimacy of changes, identifying variances, and recommending corrective actions
•  Preparing sections of the monthly progress report
•  Reviewing and analyzing project expenditures and delivery
•  Initiate procurement requisitions to acquire external services and verify documentation required
•  Creating and maintaining various spreadsheets, diagrams, and documents
•  Developing and maintaining software and hardcopy files containing project schedules, budgets, and deliverables
•  Preparing documents for distribution and filing
•  Maintaining the project files in the shared area/Control Account Manager (CAM) Notebook
•  Making sure all of the relevant project information is correctly filed
•  Preparing documentation for change requests and maintaining the change control log
•  Responsible for meeting CNL quality requirements as defined in various quality plans and supporting procedural documents in conducting the work
•  Arranging meetings and occasionally chairing meetings
•  Logging actions as required such as when Administrative Assistant is not available at meetings.


•  Secondary school graduation and a 1-year diploma or degree and 2-4 years progressively responsible and relevant business experience, and 1-3 years project management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience related to project management
•  Formal Project Management training would be an asset
•  Overall understanding of project management processes, especially those related to scope, schedule, cost, risk, change control, and earned value. 
•  Proven ability to conduct variance analysis on schedule and cost performance
•  Working knowledge of the computer-based applications used for project management purposes (i.e., scheduling software, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, etc.)
•  Strong awareness of safety
•  General awareness of engineering and operational activities
•  Some awareness of nuclear codes and standards
•  Strong knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
•  Multi-tasking, organizing priorities and managing time well to meet deadlines
