INTRO

The Radiochemical Technologist will perform the day-to-day analyses of samples submitted for radiochemical analysis, assist in the development/optimization of new methods, and assist in the maintenance of labs and instrumentation under direction from the Section Head of the Radiochemical Analysis Section. Provides radiochemical analysis support to R&D, Commercial, Licensed Facilities, Regulatory Compliance, Waste Management and Decommissioning Programs. Interacts with customers, supervision and management to set work priorities. The Analytical Chemistry Branch provides a comprehensive range of sample analysis support for all programs at CNL. This includes a variety of elemental, mass spectrometry, chromatography, radiochemistry, and water analyses. There is considerable synergy between these groups and thus strong teamwork qualities is required of the incumbent.

 

DUTIES

The Radiochemical Technologist will have responsibility for performing the day-to-day analyses of samples, assisting in the development/optimization of new methods and assisting in the maintenance of laboratories and instrumentation. The duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Receipt and handling of radioactive samples from customers according to established laboratory procedures and entry of samples into the branch sample tracking database
  • Sample preparation tasks such as homogenization, combustion, and alkali- and acid-digestion of samples etc.
  • Radiochemical analyses of diverse matrices by established procedures
  • Assisting in the development, testing and application of separation and purification techniques such as co-precipitation, solvent extraction, ion exchange and chromatography for the analysis of difficult matrices
  • Operation of a variety of modern nuclear analytical instruments including their routine calibration and maintenance
  • Participation in the planning and organization of the Section's activities
  • Preparation of relevant documentation of all processes and methods employed (with an emphasis on Quality Assurance/Quality Control requirements)
  • Maintenance of appropriate quality records in accordance with established Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) protocols
  • Purchase of lab supplies, with approval from Section Head or Branch Manager
  • Interaction with customers, both internal and external to the company when required
  • Preparation of routine progress and technical reports (including standard analysis reports)
  • Provision of technical support to other Analytical Chemistry Facilities and/or projects on an as needed basis
  • Providing assistance to the Section Head or Branch Manager when requested

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must have a good working knowledge of chemistry, math, physics, and analytical instrumentation. Candidates with practical experience in radiochemistry, and in the operation and maintenance of nuclear analytical instruments are preferred. Candidates with electronic skills and computer programming are an asset. Other desirable qualifications include:

  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education in Chemical Technologogy or another field relevant to the position
  • Practical experience in the development of analytical methods and the application of standard QA/QC procedures
  • Practical experience in analysing radioactive samples and interpreting spectral analyses of radionuclides is an asset
  • Knowledge of common system operating platforms and data handling software and computers
  • Experience with statistical analysis of data, particularly good skills with math, chemistry and physics
  • Practical experience in the development of analytical methods and the application of standard QA/QC procedures
  • Practical experience in analysing radioactive samples and interpreting spectral analyses of radionuclides is an asset
  • Knowledge of common system operating platforms and data handling software and computers
  • Experience with statistical analysis of data, particularly good skills with math, chemistry and physics

 

In addition, strong organizational skills and the ability to work in a team environment to meet project timelines are essential.
