Reporting to the Manager/Lead Architect, IDRC, the Inclusive Designer works with the project team and relevant stakeholders to design the user experience (UX) and interactions for accessible software.


Summary of Responsibilities :

  • Conduct all stages of the design process, from user research to conceptualizing to scoping and sketching to full visual, high-fidelity design, in order to achieve the design goals of each project
  • In collaboration with the design team, conduct interaction design research and requirements gathering activities, including: field studies and workshops; user and subject matter expert interviews, questionnaires and surveys; and contextual inquiries
  • Create design models, such as user personas, use case scenarios, and user interface design patterns based on user research results
  • Design highly usable and accessible user interfaces, including: creating wire frames, story boards, story cards, and prototypes for proposed functionality; collaborate with other IDRC staff and accessibility consultants to produce an optimal design; and work closely with the development team to implement designs as working user interfaces
  • Evaluate all user interfaces to ensure adherence to usability and accessibility project criteria, including: creating test plans; gathering user groups; interviewing users; and testing both in the usability lab and the users’ ordinary environments
  • Coordinate, supervise and work with graduate students, visiting faculty and postdoctoral fellows, ensuring relevant training (e.g. health and safety, AODA, etc.) have been provided
  • Co-design and develop inclusive data visualizations/presentations or manifestations
  • Assist the Manager/Lead Architect and IDRC staff in other tasks that contribute to the successful operation of IDRC


Qualifications :

  • Undergraduate degree in Human Computer Interaction, Interface Design, Human Systems Engineering, or related field, with a minimum of three years of work experience in software design, or equivalent
  • Experience performing usability studies, contextual design, and heuristic reviews of software products
  • Strong understanding of best practice design principles, user-centered design methodology, participatory design, user testing, inclusive design and software accessibility principles
  • Experience creating user interfaces for prototype-level web, desktop, mobile applications and other interactive software
  • Expertise and knowledge of web design standards, such as XHTML and CSS; experience with agile software development preferred
  • Familiarity with Visio, OmniGraffle, Illustrator, Photoshop, or other visualization software
  • Strong oral and written communication, presentation, and facilitation skills, with an ability to communicate abstract design ideas clearly using storyboards, wire frames, flowcharts, and working prototypes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and judgement, with a demonstrated ability to deal with sensitive or confidential matters with discretion and tact
  • Understanding of current accessibility legislation, including the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) , as well as familiarity with W3C Accessibility Guidelines and the AccessForAll standard
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities and an understanding of assistive technologies are assets
  • Strong planning, analytic and problem solving skills with a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to respond effectively to multiple and changing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate collaboratively in a distributed team environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment for students, staff and faculty
  • Familiarity with and experience in using data science tools and in data visualization techniques
  • Understanding of access barriers to data science tools, data processes, data analytics and machine learning for people with disabilities


Compensation: $61,203.39 to $80,437.72 per annum plus 4% vacation pay and 7% in lieu of benefits


Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, for a total of 35 hours per week. This is a temporary one-year contract position.
